The Wine
Super Sonoman Wine is made from fruit sourced from meticulously tended vineyards planted high on ridges across the Mayacamas mountain range. Each of these vineyards possess unique soil composition and extraordinary drainage. The vineyards for our wine program are all volcanic in nature; the soil composition in the vineyards tends to be extremely rocky and rich in complexity with thick layers of decomposed and solid volcanic rock, along with deposits of ash and minerals.
These micro vineyards are all similar in that they are small blocks of vines planted to Bordeaux clones and largely to rootstocks 110R and 3309. The root stock and clones play an important role in the Super Sonoman Wine program. Vines that are watered excessively may produce high yields, but this fruit may also lack true complexity and the breadth of nuances of the terroir. With the right clone, in conjunction with the right stock, and watering program, we can largely control the fruit flavor profile and aid in the expression of the terroir.
Each of these micro vineyards are planted to Bordeaux clones, primarily Cabernet Sauvignon clones, including 15, 337, 338, and 341. All are low yielding clones originally brought to the United States from France. These clones produce many of the finest, most acclaimed, wines in the world. Grapes from these clones are appreciated for their small berries and moderate yield, which in turn provide higher juice to skin contact. Wines produced from these clones tend to be dense and complex.
The vineyards we use in our program are meticulously tended to for Super Sonoman Wine. Our wine program necessitates that fruit clusters are pared down shortly after bloom, additionally any fruit that has been damaged is removed throughout the growing season. These processes of pruning, trimming, and the pairing down of flower clusters before they become fruit all contribute to the development of physiologically mature fruit with complex and intense flavors.
All of these elements have come together to create the harmony that is Super Sonoman Wine.
